In 1963 Yogi Berra retired as a player for the New York Yankees and was hired as Manager in 1964. Berra took the Yankees to the World Series where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3. Yogi Berra was fired the next day. The Series MVP was St. Lewis pitcher Bob Gibson.

Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched a perfect game in a 6-0 victory over the New York Mets. Bunning went on to become a United States Senator.

The United States had suffered a great loss in 1961 when their entire Olympic Figure Skating team died in a plane crash in Belgium. U.S. Women's figure skater Peggy Flemming came in sixth.
