astrodome

The Houston Astrodome billed as the Eighth Wonder of the World was the first ballpark to have a roof over the playing field. During an exhibition game in late 1965 it was found the semitransparent roof panels made fly balls too difficult to see.The tiles were painted which killed the grass. Opening day in 1966 it was ready with added new feature of astroturf., but the grass died. This led to the installation of plastic grass known as Astroturf.
