Motor Trend picked the Mercury Cougar as their car of the year in 1967. It was sold under the Mercury brand of the Ford Motor Company's Lincoln-Mercury Division. The name was first used in 1967 and was carried by a diverse series of cars over the next 30 years.The Cougar shared the basic platform with the Ford Mustang but with a higher end European luxury look.

1967 was the year General Motors introduced their "Pony Cars" to compete with the very successful Ford Mustang. Pony cars are defined as sporty vehicles for the youth market usually with bucket seats with shifting on the floor or a console. GM came out with two models, the Chevrolet Camero and the Pontiac Firebird,
